Recrudescence refers to new malarial attacks that appear after a period of latency usually within 8 weeks after the culmination of primary attack. Most commonly seen with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium malariae infections. This is due to the persistence of erythrocytic cycle of may also be due to the waning immunity of host or antigenic variations in the parasite. There may be a number of such recrudescences which are generally milder than the primary attack. After a varying number of such attacks, the infection is usually eliminated.
